I am delighted to announce that John Wollaston has been accredited as an eSmart school. Promoted by The Alannah and Madeline Foundation as a federal initiative, eSmart schools are characterised by their proactive stance against inappropriate online behaviour and their strong policies and practices to promote safe and responsible use of digital technology. Of particular relevance to the school context is the management of cybersafety, bullying and cyberbullying. A successful initiative at John Wollaston has been the appointment of student Cyber Leaders in the Secondary School who work with their peers to raise awareness and promote smart and safe online behaviour.
Head of Charter House, Pauline Galley is to be commended for her excellent work in this area. Several years ago we were invited to be a pilot school for a cyberbullying research project undertaken by Edith Cowan University. The concept of cyberbullying was new at that time and we were fortunate to be able to participate. Subsequently, through Mrs Galley's leadership, we have been involved in other projects to ensure we keep pace with an ever changing cyber landscape. To become an eSmart school is a logical progression of our work in this area.

For the safety of our children I encourage everyone in our school community to uphold and promote eSmart behaviours at school and at home. If you are concerned about incidents of cyberbullying or risky online behaviour, please do not hesitate to contact our eSmart coordinator Mrs Galley or the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, Nick Jones or Senior Deputy Head of Primary, Fiona Shand.

Textiles Award
Our Textiles students are to be commended on their recent success. Four of our students, Karrina Cain, Sasha Lewin, Rebecca Morrison and Madelaine Sallie entered their Textiles project into a competition entitled Wearable Waste. Their gown, made of confectionary wrappers, placed equal first out of 111 entries. The girls won $500 to go towards a sustainability initiative at John Wollaston. Having seen the gown, I can attest to its sturdy construction but can only begin to imagine the hours it must have taken in design and manufacture, not to mention the huge consumption of lollies to obtain the wrappers! Congratulations to the girls and their Textiles teacher, Carolyn Gelmi on an innovative and enjoyable project.

Remembrance Day Service
The whole school gathered in the Berry Durston Indoor Sports Centre just prior to 11.00am last Friday for our annual Remembrance Day Service. It has become tradition for Year 7 students to lead the Service with input from other students and staff. They do so with confidence and poise ensuring that the occasion is dignified and respectful.

It is my observation that young people have become increasingly interested in the sacrifices that Australian service men and women have made through the years to ensure a more peaceful world. Growing attendances at ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services and related events attest to that. On Friday, our students listened intently to the historical explanation provided by the Head of Humanities, Gary Bordoni and the prayers for the fallen. At 11.00am not a sound could be heard.

I delivered the following well- known blessing to conclude the Service:

Go forth into the world in peace;
be of good courage;
hold fast to that which is good;
render to no one evil for evil;
strengthen the faint hearted;
support the weak;
help the afflicted;
honour everyone;
love and serve the Lord,
rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.


2016 Praise and Thanksgiving Ceremonies

The academic year concludes with Praise and Thanksgiving. This is a special time for the school commencing to give thanks and acknowledge studetn achievement. It is an expectation that all students attend their age appropriate Praise and Thanksgiving ceremony.

SEQTA access - Year 12 Parents and Students
Year 12 parent and student access to SEQTA Engage and SEQTA Learn will cease at the end of 2016 or very early in the New Year. Parents and students are advised to ensure that they have printed off academic reports before the end of the 2016 calendar year to ensure that they have this information before their access finishes.

Year 11 Statement of Results
The Year 11 Statement of Results will be available on SEQTA Engage and SEQTA Learn by Wednesday 28 November. Only course results (not certificate results) will appear on this statement. Please check the Statement of Results carefully and advise the School if there is a concern with any of the course results.

Final Academic Report Years 7 to 11
The Final Academic Report will not be posted to parents this year. All reports will only be available through SEQTA Engage and SEQTA Learn. The Final Report will include subject/course results and teacher comments.

  • Year 11 Reports will be available to access during the first week of December.
  • Years 7 to 10 Reports will be available to access during the third week of December.


Year 11 Final School Day and the Dinner Dance

The Year 11 students concluded their academic year on Thursday 17 November. Students gathered in the Chapel at 2:15pm for a Chapel Service led by Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, Nick Jones who also managed to motivate many of the students to sing two Christmas carols. As Year 12s next year, the students will be further encouraged to sing in Chapel and perhaps other forums, so start practising Year 11s!

The following evening many Year 11s attended the Dinner Dance at the Willow Pond Reception Centre in Canning Vale. After a lovely meal, their dancing instructor arrived and after a quick refresher of some ballroom dance moves, the dancing to music commenced! It was fantastic to see the level of participation and the delight on the faces of the students as they danced with enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment. Even the teachers were invited to dance by a number of students, after the instructor put this idea forward! Naturally, a dance involving a change of partners was selected so most of the boys danced with the Principal!

‘Awards’ were also presented during the evening. Monique Stubberfield and Ryan Edwards were recognised for their skills in formal dancing and for freestyle dancing, Matthew Blechynden was the choice of the judges. A great night was had by all. The students conducted themselves in a mature and responsible manner; the School is very proud of them. Well done!

Year 10 Examinations and Final School Day
Year 10 students commenced their examinations with English on Friday 18 November. On Monday 21 November they will sit Science and Society and Environment examinations and Mathematics on Tuesday 22 November. Good luck, Year 10s!

Years 10 and 11 Praise and Thanksgiving – Tuesday 29 November
All Year 10 and 11 students and are expected to attend the Year 10 and 11 Praise and Thanksgiving Ceremony on Tuesday 29 November at 6.30pm in the BDISC. Winter School Uniform is to be worn. Parents are warmly invited and strongly encouraged to attend this important evening, which completes the Senior Secondary school year and recognises the many achievements of our students. We look forward to seeing you at Praise and Thanksgiving.

Years 7, 8 and 9 Praise and Thanksgiving – Monday 5 December
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 finish their school year on Monday 5 December. During the morning, the Year 7, 8 and 9 Praise and Thanksgiving Ceremony will be held at 9:00am in the BDSIC. Students are to wear their Summer School Uniform. Parents are most welcome and warmly invited to attend. A series of organised student activities are planned for the afternoon, before student dismissal at 3:05pm to commence summer holidays.

2017 Booklists are in the process of being finalised and will be available to access from the School web page in due course.

MacBook Returns
Students in Years 7, 8, 10 and 11 are required to hand in their MacBook to the IT office on the last day of term. Student should ensure they have taken a copy of any work, music, photos, software etc. on the MacBook as it will be reimaged and updated for 2017. Students may collect their same MacBook from the IT Office from the second week in January. Any student not returning to John Wollaston for 2017 will also need to return the charger to avoid an invoice for replacement costs. Parents of Year 9 students will shortly be sent information from the Business Manager, Gailene Shore regarding the purchase of their MacBook and the 2017, 1:1 programme.

STEM Day 2016

Students in the Year 7 Pegasus Programme participated in the School’s first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Day on Monday 7 November 2016. The main focus for the day was problem solving. Activities in the morning were devoted to the topic of Forces and Propulsion. Students were tasked with building either a fan powered electric car or a catapult. They needed to consider the variables they had controlled, those they deliberately manipulated and then how they would measure the effect of any changes made. Students also saw rockets in action and then looked at the reactions needed to cause propulsion. Finally, the students learned about Newton’s Laws of motion and evaluated their designs.

In the afternoon the students became sleuths, solving a most heinous crime. Using fingerprints, luminol, hair and fibre samples, as well as footprints and blood types, the students were able to track down the thief. Scientific methodology was used to eliminate possible suspects and finally bring the villain to justice!

The benefits of STEM Day were wide ranging; students are exposed to a style of learning they do not traditionally experience. While our students do a lot of inquiry learning, the ability to problem solve and work collaboratively in a cross curricular setting is enhanced. The students reported that the day was both fun and informative and they were looking forward to doing more Science in the future. Some even said that the real life experiences have made them consider possible STEM based careers.

Staff also gained much from the experience. Being able to work with the younger students in a more intense way has given them insight into their abilities and interests, while also allowing all participants to extend their repertoire of lessons and skills. All staff involved did experiments and demonstrations with the students that they had not done before.

The event was so successful that a number of initiatives involving other student year groups, staff from other subject areas and a possible STEM Week are being explored for the future.

Inter-House Rowing Regatta

The Secondary Inter-House Rowing Regatta will be held this Sunday 20 November at ANA Bayswater 9.00am to 11.15am.


ANA’s boat shed and clubrooms are located at the Hinds Reserve, Bayswater. It is just upstream of the Garratt Road Bridge with access via Milne Street.

We have a wonderful Praise and Thanksgiving Ceremony planned for Tuesday 6 December, the last day of School. Please come along and join us on this special morning to celebrate all the great things that have happened in our school over the year and to farewell our Year 6 students. Parents and children from our Early Learning Centre are very welcome to join the audience and watch the older children receive their awards. There are many musical performances and it is certainly a wonderful occasion. Please join us at 8.50am in the BDISC. All students from Year 2 to Year 6 are required to attend in formal Summer Uniform.

Kindergarten Orientation
On Wednesday 16 November we welcomed many new parents to John Wollaston at our Kindy Orientation morning. This event is designed to give our new and existing families a thorough introduction to our School. Many of our new students come to John Wollaston on the recommendation of friends and family and this adds to the positive atmosphere in our Early Learning Centre. We are proud of our play based early learning philosophy that is embedded in the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Our families appreciate this holistic approach to learning, where we encourage children to inquire, explore and investigate as part of our intentional teaching. Starting at an early age, we want our students to learn the essential life skills of collaboration and sharing with others. We have a wonderful Kindergarten team with dedicated teachers and Education Assistants making such a positive impact in our School.

Orientation Day
Today all Pre-Primary to Year 6 students experienced a morning in the class they are likely to be part of next year. We welcomed over 25 new students to our Primary School, in addition to a large number of new Year 7 students for 2017 who enjoyed a great morning in the Secondary School. Each new student was thrilled to receive a buddy letter in the post from an existing John Wollaston student, as a welcome to our School. That same student then buddied up with their new friend as part of Orientation Day. All students were very excited and had a great morning bonding with each other and our staff. Thank you to Deputy Head of Primary, Fiona Shand for her excellent work in organising such a special day for our students.

Rottnest Island Encounter

On Thursday 17 November the Year 2s had a big day out at Rottnest Island. A very excited group of staff and students boarded the Rottnest Express, arriving at the island in quick time to marvel at the many quokkas, take in the sights, complete some stimulating learning activities and build up an appetite for Subway, Simmo’s Icecream and a yummy afternoon tea. Thank you to Year 2 teachers, Jo Burman and Kirsty Robertson for organising a wonderful Encounter experience. Thank you also to the many staff who attended, making such a wonderful day possible.

On Tuesday 15 November, a number of our ELC instrumental students had the opportunity to perform for their peers, teachers and parents. I love watching our younger students perform. Book Fair Success!
The 2016 Book Fair was once again met with a buzz of excitement by our students. This year was our most successful ever, selling $7043.10 worth of books and novelty items. From this fantastic figure the Library Resource Centre was able to purchase approximately $1000 worth of books and we have a further $1200 to spend on Scholastic books throughout 2017. The Library staff would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support of this event.

Main Campus Traffic Entrance
The main entrance to the School is not to be used to drop off / pick up students or park as these bays are designated parking for staff and visitors. For the safety of the School community, it is imperative to adhere to all traffic requests. Parents are requested to use the slip road, new car park at the rear of the gym or the Church of Christ car park.

Church Of Christ Car Parking

  • Please park only in designated parking bays. Do not park in the yellow marked bays or drive on the Church of Christ’s lawns;
  • Please ensure you have clear vision before reversing slowly from your car bay as there could be a small child in your path;
  • Please enter and exit the car parks where designated;
  • Please do not call your child across Centre Road between the buses. All children are to cross Centre Road at the crosswalk.

Slip Road

  • Please do not park your car and leave it unattended. If you need to walk with or meet your child/ren at the classroom, please use the Church of Christ car park or the car park at the rear of the Berry Durston Indoor Sports Centre (entrance at rear of the gym).
  • Please park to pick up your child. Do not call the child into the traffic flow to board your car as this may compromise his/her safety. It also halts the flow of traffic.

Inverness Circle Car Parking
To assist in alleviating traffic congestion, parents are also able to pick-up / drop-off children at the rear entrance to the School from Inverness Circle.

Certifcate II Outdoor Recreation - Kayaking
Certifcate II Outdoor Recreation is a nationally recognised qualification delivered over two years. This Certificate gives the participants a great opportunity to develop an understanding of environmentally sustainable interactions with the world around us, working effectively within a team environment and developing a number of skills including mountain biking, snorkelling and kayaking. A number of excursions from Rottnest, to the hills, to Shark Bay, are undertaken by students in order to complete the course. This Certificate offers many enjoyable learning experiences.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the P&F Sundowner on Tuesday 15 November. Our inaugural event was a fantastic success and we look forward to making it an annual highlight on the school calendar. Thanks also to Principal, Anne Ford who joined us on the evening to draw the raffle. Congratulations to Donna Downing who won 2017 School Fees for her eldest child and to Julian Lee, who won the 2017 ICT Levy. We also hope to make this raffle an annual event. I would also like to send a personal thank you to the incredibly hard-working P&F Committee for all their efforts and support this year. We’ve had a fantastic year and attempted some new initiatives, and our school simply wouldn’t be the community it is without these amazing people. I look forward to an equally successful 2017 and wish you all a well-deserved break.

Pavilion on the Go

The City of Armadale’s $8 million Harrisdale pavilion and playing fields is near completion and will be ready for use in early 2017.

With completion expected in late December, current work on the pavilion includes glazing, internal fitout, and construction of the car park.

Following this, the children’s playground and shade structure will be installed next to the pavilion.

The pavilion and playing field are strategically located between Harrisdale Primary School and Harrisdale Secondary School on Gracefield Boulevard and all three sites form part of an important education and community precinct to service the quickly growing community.

The precinct is the first of nine where the City will enter into shared use arrangements with the Department of Education over its use, maximising efficient use of public open space and creating far better facilities for the community.

The remainder of the shared sites will be delivered in the City’s high-growth areas over the next 15 years.

Friendly face of City shopping

Armadale shoppers will see new, friendly faces in Jull Street this summer with the City of Armadale introducing Community Liaison Officers who will be acting to ensure the City’s main shopping precinct remains a vibrant and welcoming place for families during the festive shopping period.

Working in cooperation with the two major shopping centres, the City trial will run from November to January and will evaluate whether the presence of Community Liaison Officers can provide a more welcoming shopping venue for patrons.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM JP said the project forms part of the City’s commitment to ensuring a positive experience in the area.

“The important thing is to measure whether the officers can make a difference to the shopping experience,” he said.

“That will give the business community a good guide as to whether it is worth extending these services into the future.”

Are you bushfire ready?

The City is encouraging residents to be proactive and reduce fuel loads now, to make their properties bushfire safe ahead of this summer.

Until 30 November, all property owners with an area over 1200sqm require a Permit to Burn should they wish to undertake a hazard reduction burn on their property.

As burning is prohibited from 1 December until 31 March residents need to act now. It is critical that people living in bushfire prone areas maintain protection zones around their properties. It may be the difference between losing and keeping your house in the event of an emergency situation.

Preparing your home and property for bushfires can make a world of difference for firefighters, who may have to prioritise between which houses are saveable and which are not.

Permits can be obtained from Ranger Services at the City of Armadale’s Administration Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 4pm.

Alternative arrangements may be made by contacting Ranger Services on 9394 5000 during normal office hours.

Gloves on against mozzies

City residents are reminded that with the onset of warmer weather there will be more mosquito activity and therefore a greater risk of mosquito borne disease.

Recent substantial rainfall combined with increasing temperatures, and predictions of higher than usual tidal activity in coming months, are likely to favour increased breeding of mosquitoes

The City urges everyone to be alert and take extra precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes over the coming spring and summer months.

The City is partnering with the WA Department of Health to launch the Fight The Bite campaign this year.

Our Christmas spectacle

In an annual Christmas tradition, the City of Armadale invites you to join in the festive spirit of the holiday season with Carols by Candlelight on Friday, 2 December.

This heart-warming Christmas event is bursting with community celebration and pride as it showcases some of the incredible talent from the Armadale area.

Kicking off in the early hours of the evening in the Jull Street Mall, the Christmas Parade, featuring a variety of colourful characters and local community groups, provides a wondrous spectacle for the young and imaginative.

In the stunning setting of Memorial Park, the audience will be treated to a musical spectacular with performances by a number of local schools and community choirs.

Lunch vibes in the Mall

The City of Armadale is launching a new series of Music in the Mall in November, bringing Jull Street Mall alive during the Friday lunch session.

An eclectic mix of performers will play each Friday from noon to 2pm during November and December.

From jazz and bluegrass stomps to reggae and Latin grooves, the selection of artists performing this year is sure to create positive vibes for shoppers and City workers alike.

Summer school holiday trading
For your convenience the Uniform Store will be open during the Summer school holidays on the following days:


Last day of trading for 2016
The last day of normal trading for 2016 will be Monday 5 December 8:30am to 10:00am

Special Open Days for Year 3 students for 2017
Students who are transferring from Year 2 to Year 3 in 2017 for your convenience the store will be open:

Wednesday 7 December 2016 9:00am to 1:00pm
Thursday 8 December 2016 9:00am to 1:00pm
Please only this year level.

Letter for Year 2 Students

Blazer orders
Anyone requiring a Blazer for Term 2 2017 will need to have their order in no later than Friday 3 February 2017.

Letter for Year 7 Students

Normal Trading Hours will apply from Wednesday 1 February 2017 1:30pm – 3:30pm.


Please be reminded that the Summer Uniform is to be worn during Term 1 2017 as follows:

Early Learning Centre (ELC) Kindergarten to Year 2  Summer Uniform - Girls and Boys
JW Shorts and Red Polo shirt with stripe on collar and sleeve (embroidered with School crest), Navy sport socks with red and white stripe, white sneakers and School Hat.

Primary to Secondary Summer Uniform
Boys: Navy blue shorts, white shirt and long navy socks with red stripe, School hat/cap.
Girls: Dress and crew socks with red stripe, School hat/cap.

Please be reminded that the Summer Uniform is to be worn during Term 4 as follows:

You are welcome to place  small orders via phone or email, with payment by credit card. These orders will be delivered to your child’s class.
