Works paving the way for Piara Waters South Pavilion

Site works will soon be underway for the new Piara Waters South Pavilion and Playing Field, bringing the second of nine shared use community facilities in the region to fruition.

The community and sporting facility is being constructed by the City of Armadale and is located on Tuberose Road, Piara Waters. The facility will include a playing field, pavilion for sports and community use, change rooms, playground and car parking.

The pavilion itself will feature multi-purpose function rooms, club room, kitchen, kiosk, alfresco area and step seating for spectators.

Funding for the $8 million facility includes $6.9 million from the City’s Development Contribution Plan, and the City was also successful in securing a $500,000 grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation through its Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund.

The WA Department of Education is also making a contribution to the playing field component of the project, as this will be shared with the proposed adjoining primary school to the south.

Construction is currently scheduled to start by May/June 2017 and will take up to 15 months to complete.

 

Cosplay series for the anime afficionados

Starting in February, the Armadale Library will host a six part series of free cosplay workshops and panels

Whether you’re a fan with aspirations or long term cosplayer, these colourful sessions will appeal to all.

You can attend one, some or all of the sessions, but places are limited so bookings are essential.

All sessions are held at the Armadale Library. Apart from the introduction session (3-4pm), all discussion panels are from 1-2pm, with workshops from 2-3pm.

Free films with the family

The City of Armadale’s busy Summer calendar of events continues into February and March with the 2017 Movies in the Park series.

Four free films will be screened in parks across the Armadale district and everyone is invited to bring their friends and family and a picnic rug to enjoy a family friendly screening.

Our outstanding citizens

A special ceremony hosted by the City as part of Australia Day celebrations recognised outstanding contributions to the community by individuals, groups and community events within the local community.

Ben Boekholt was awarded the Citizen of the Year while Jeff Munn was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year.

Brothers Brody and Jake Galipo won Citizen of the Year – Youth, and the Classic Sounds Orchestra Association won the Active Citizenship Award for the group’s contributions to the community.

In 2017 the Australia Day Citizenship Awards were relaunched to recognise a wider range of community champions and renamed the Citizen of the Year Awards.

Grants program open in March

The second round of the City’s Community Grants Program for 2016/2017 opens on 2 March.

Applications are welcome from not-for-profit groups that wish to receive up to $1000 funding for projects which benefit the local community.

You are all invited to our Parents & Friends Association Family Picnic and Entertainment on Wednesday 15 February from 5.30pm to 8.00pm. This event is free for families courtesy of the generosity of our Parents & Friends Association.

Come and enjoy the jazz/pop sounds of Perth songstress Minky G and guitarist Rosco Dwyer. The duo has played their brand of chilled acoustic music both nationally and internationally, delighting audiences with catchy originals and well chosen covers. Between them, they’ve jammed with Beyoncé's band, supported UK artist Passenger, James Morrison and John Butler. They once accidentally supported Gyroscope... as well as a cheeky gig at the Queen's Jubilee Celebrations in England! Both Minky G and Rosco have trained at the WA Academy of Performing Arts in jazz guitar and have performed at the Ellington Jazz Club, Little Creatures, Settlers Tavern and the Beaufort Street Festival.

Parent Information Night
It was wonderful to see so many families at our Parent Information Night on the first Wednesday of the School year. We all enjoyed a couple of songs from Minky G (Michelle Gardner, one of our peripatetic music teachers). We heard from each member of the Primary Leadership Team, who outlined their goals for the year. Then parents moved to the relevant classrooms to hear a little more about specific year groups. Thank you to our teaching staff for such a warm welcome back for our students and families at John Wollaston. We pride ourselves on being a caring community and this has been very much in evidence over the past few weeks.

New Students
We welcome our many new students to John Wollaston Anglican Community School. So many families are joining us on the recommendation of friends and family and the reasons for enrolling are often similar; to find a safe, friendly school where learning and good character are nurtured and celebrated. Our focus on socio-emotional learning and the inquiry framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme provides the opportunity to learn through questioning, while encouraging a sense of wonder at how the world works and how important it is to be kind and gentle to each other. Our new students have settled in extremely well and the feedback from their families is credit to our caring and dedicated staff.

Swimming Lessons
Many students have just finished swimming lessons, after beginning on the second day of the school year. Thank you to our Physical Education Specialist Teacher, Mel Fowler, for organising our swimming lessons; such an important skill for all children to develop and despite some challenging weather conditions, our students have enjoyed this worthwhile experience.

Year 6 Canberra Tour
We look forward to the Year 6 Encounter Experience, a tour to Canberra in May. Staff and students will leave on Sunday May 14 and return Thursday May 18. We will visit the old Parliament House (now the Museum of Australian Democracy), Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial and other iconic venues.

This year, we will be staying at the Australian Institute of Sport. Our Year 6 students will be fortunate to participate in a variety of educational programmes with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship programme. To assist families in meeting the cost of this tour, the Australian Government contributes funding of $240 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme. This rebate is paid directly to the School after the tour.

Year 6 Parent Information Session for the Canberra Tour
A Parent Information Session for the Canberra Tour will take place on Friday 3 March at 2.20pm, in the Chapel. Students will meet their parents in the Chapel and attend together. I look forward to seeing you there!

P&F Family Picnic
I look forward to seeing you all at the P&F Picnic next Wednesday night, starting at 5.30pm on the lawns near the Library. With food trucks, great music for all ages and the chance to meet new families please come along and support this fantastic initiative by the Parents and Friends Association. Make sure you RSVP (See link below) as tickets will be allocated for the free meals on the night. Bring a picnic rug, or some chairs, and enjoy a great night at John Wollaston!

Healthy Eating Recipe
At the Primary Information Session last week we launched ‘Healthy Eating at John Wollaston’. We are focusing on the development of life long healthy eating habits. This term we are encouraging all students from Pre Kindy to Year 6 to eat fruit and vegetables for morning tea. We are also promoting healthy lunchboxes that include fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, meat or alternatives, dairy products and water and limit the intake of food containing saturated fat, added salt and added sugars. Throughout the year we have many more initiatives planned including package free days, student recipes, healthy meal deals from the café and growing our own vegetables at school. Each fortnight in the newsletter we will provide information around ‘Healthy Eating’ including new recipes you may like to try out. We look forward to your support and would love to hear any ideas you may have around the promotion of healthy eating habits.

Wholemeal Cheesy Vegemite Scrolls
500g (3 ¾ cups) wholemeal bread flour
7g sachet (2 tsp) dried yeast
½ tsp sugar
350ml warm water, approximately
1 tbs canola oil*
1 ½ tbs Vegemite
1 cup grated reduced fat tasty cheese
Canola oil spray*

 
  1. Combine flour, yeast and sugar in a large bowl, stir in oil and warm water to form dough.
  2. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Lightly grease a large bowl with cooking spray, place dough in bowl, cover loosely with plastic wrap and stand in a warm spot for 30-40 minutes or until dough has almost doubled in size.
  4. Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C fan-forced).
  5. Punch down dough with fist then knead again until smooth and elastic. Roll out dough to form a 30cm x 30cm square.
  6. Spread Vegemite evenly over dough and sprinkle with 3⁄4 cup of the grated cheese. Roll up dough and cut into 10 pieces.
  7. Grease a large oven tray with cooking spray. Place pieces, cut side down, on tray and sprinkle with remaining 1⁄4 cup of grated cheese.
  8. Cover with a tea towel and return to warm spot for 15 minutes or until doubled in size.
  9. Bake in preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes.

Welcome
The new school year has started on a busy but positive note. It has been wonderful to see so many students accessing the wonderful grounds and facilities that we have at John Wollaston, despite some safety restrictions currently in place, due to the Upper Primary build. Thanks go to many of our students who have displayed great citizenship and a caring attitude in welcoming our newest secondary students over the past two weeks. I look forward to seeing students with smiling faces, wearing uniforms correctly and with pride, over the coming weeks.

Encounter Programme Term 1
Under the direction of David Crawford, Co-Curricular Coordinator, 2017 will see the expansion of our Encounter Programme across all secondary year groups. In addition to developing Positive Education and our Value Added Programme across the School with dedicated sessions timetabled each week, students will also participate in a number of special events.

Our Year 12 Encounter took place at Fairbridge Village in the week before Term 1 commenced. The students challenged themselves on activities such as the climbing wall, abseiling, the high ropes course and mountain biking, as well as enjoying the opportunity to reflect in a chapel service conducted by The Reverend Noel Oakey, Chaplain at Fredrick Irwin Anglican School. An additional highlight was guest speaker Peter Sharp who had some inspirational and thought provoking things to say! The new pre-term timing of this event allowed the Year 12s an undistracted start to the school year. Our students are to be congratulated on their maturity, enthusiasm and consideration for others. A huge thank you to Nick Jones, Deputy Principal Pastoral Care for his organisation of the Year 12 Encounter and also to the students' Heads of House for their considerable commitment to our most senior students.

Year 7 students will participate in their Encounter camp, also to be held at Fairbridge Village, from Monday 20 March to Thursday 23 March. This is always a wonderful event, providing students with the opportunity to get to know each other whilst having fun and experiencing some new challenges.
A new addition to the 2017 calendar is the Year 8 Encounter to the Swan Valley Adventure Centre from Monday 27 March to Wednesday 29 March. Our Year 8s are sure to have a fantastic time at this exciting venue. Parents will receive more information about the Year 7 and 8 Encounter experiences over the coming weeks.

Year 12 Ball
The Year 12 Ball will be held on 24 February at the Parmelia Hilton in the Perth CBD. This year’s theme is ‘A Night under the Stars’ with planning well underway. I know students are looking forward to what is traditionally a wonderful night of glitz and glamour.

Secondary Clubs
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will have recently brought home a Clubs Booklet from which they need to select a club/clubs for Terms 1 and 2. It is compulsory for Year 7, 8, and 9 students to participate in a Club. Please read the detailed information at the front of the Clubs booklet and assist your child in making a choice that he/she can attend regularly, will enjoy and will learn some new skills.

Students who are involved in JSAS or the School Band are asked to still return a slip with this as the Number 1 choice; there is no need to complete choices 2 and 3. Participation in a Club is a terrific opportunity to meet new people and to ‘give back’ to the School. Queries about Club membership may be directed to David Crawford, Encounter Coordinator; student’s Head of House; or to Nick Jones, Deputy Principal Pastoral Care.

School Representation
We continue to work hard at John Wollaston, to build a sense of pride and achievement for students in representing the School, whether it be in a sporting competition, a cultural outing or just by wearing their uniform proudly both on and off the campus. With the Secondary Inter-House Swimming Carnival rapidly approaching on Thursday 2 March, we expect our strongest swimmers to put their hand up for participation in the Inter-School Carnival in Week 7 and do their very best for John Wollaston.

Commissioning of Student Leaders
The Commissioning of School Leaders will be held on Friday 17 February at 8.50am in the Berry Durston Indoor Sports Centre. The Year 12 Prefects will be presented to the School community along with Year 12 House Seniors, Year 11 Peer Support Leaders, House Councillors (Years 8 to 12), Primary Captains and Primary Class Representatives. Year 7 House Councillors will be elected at the end of Term 1 and will be commissioned at the Colours Assembly on 5 April. Parents and families are warmly welcomed to attend the Commissioning and to stay for light refreshments afterwards.

Academic Scholarships for 2018
John Wollaston Anglican Community School is delighted to announce Academic Scholarships for 2018. Year 4, Year 6 and Year 9 students enrolled in government or independent schools, including current John Wollaston students, are invited to participate in a scholarship examination to be conducted at John Wollaston Anglican Community School commencing at 8.20am in The Commons, on Saturday 17 June 2017.

Two scholarships per year level are being offered. Successful applicants will be granted a 50% remission on Tuition Fees. The scholarships will be awarded for the student’s education for a three (3) year period commencing from entry into Year 5, Year 7 or Year 10 in 2018, at John Wollaston Anglican Community School. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to experience the modern facilities, engaging learning programmes and supportive staff that the School has to offer.

Successful Parent Information Evenings and House Breakfasts
Thank you to the many parents who have attended the Primary and Secondary Information Evenings since school resumed. These early meetings enable the staff to share important information and address any concerns that parents may have at this early stage of the school year. In the event that you were unable to attend, I urge you to make contact with your child's class teacher in the Primary and/or Nick Tanner Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School who will be happy to update you as appropriate. I look forward to meeting Year 11 parents at the Year 11 Parent Information Evening at 6.00pm in the Chapel on Monday 20 February.

House Breakfasts are a new initiative in the Secondary School to provide an opportunity for students, parents and House staff to gather informally in the cause of building spirit and a stronger affiliation with the House. Feedback from the breakfasts has been positive despite the vagaries of the weather this week. Thank you to parents who attended and took the opportunity to speak to their House Teacher and Head of House.

Pegasus Society Morning Tea
It was a pleasure to host morning tea for the 41 members of the Pegasus Society this week. The Society, which acknowledges our highest academic achievers in Years 8-12, presently has the largest number of members in its short history. Members engage in a range of activities throughout the semester to develop their skills and abilities. Congratulations to all involved.

Little Wollies
After a successful orientation with their parents last week, our youngest students, the three year old Little Wollies, have commenced a full day with their teacher Miss Chloe Devereux and Education Assistant Mrs Sharon Leitch. I visited the class yesterday and was impressed by their sense of industry in the sandpit and playground. The children were happily exploring their surrounds after enjoying a music session on the mat. They have a wonderful programme ahead of them this year. The Thursday class is now full and we will commence a Friday class in Term 2. Enrolment enquiries can be directed to the Registrar Ann Brightmore.

Public Art acquisition 
From late October to mid December last year, the City of Perth hosted the largest public art event in the world, Cow Parade Perth 2016. This event featured 40 life size cows across various city locations. In keeping with other Cow Parades across the globe, the cows arrived as blank canvases and were crafted, sculpted and painted by some of Western Australia's prominent artists and fashion designers. The transformed cows were then exhibited for six weeks throughout city malls, parks, iconic buildings and precincts, with some auctioned at the Telethon Ball raising money to support child health research.

Given the School's history as a farm, it seemed a good opportunity to acquire a cow. We have purchased Amilita, by husband and wife artists Audrey Fernandes Satar and Mahomad Arif Satar which was located near the Bell Tower. She is now located on the lawn in front of the Technology Centre and will move to various parts of the School during the course of the year before being permanently homed. She has attracted a deal of attention from the students. Families visiting for the P&F Picnic and Entertainment event on Wednesday 15 February will be able to see her and read the plaque telling the artists' story.
