The MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer® 2016

The MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer®

A new year, a new ride, a new cure.

On 15 & 16 October 2016 a team of 13 riders from John Wollaston Anglican Community School will embark on a 200+km cycling event '2016 Harry Perkins Ride to Conquer cancer' to raise money for cancer research. The team consists of; team captain Primary Physical Education Specialist Melanie Fowler, Year 7 teachers Dave Crawford and Tracey Rogers, Year 2 Teachers Joanne Burman and Kirsty Robertson, Pre-Primary Teacher Lauren Downing, School parents Greg Cant, Elizabeth Delval and Michael Delval, past student and 2014 Head Prefect Jessica Williams, Primary Receptionist Donna Brown's husband Darren Brown and good friend of the team and Year 4/5 Teacher at Falcon Primary School, Ben Turner. For some of the team it will be the third or fourth time they have participated in the ride. Each year the team has expanded as a result of the interest generated by this worthy cause.

Every rider has their own story about a loved one lost to cancer, had their own cancer scare or has a loved one lucky enough to have survived a diagnosis. "As a school community we ride for those who no longer can, for those we remember, for family, for loved ones, for our colleagues and for our school families touched by cancer," Ms Fowler said.

The ride leaves Perth around 6.00am in the morning on Saturday 15 October and riders enjoy a journey through the southern suburbs to Mandurah where the team sleep in small tents known as tent land. On Sunday, the teams awake to a cooked breakfast and embark on day two, departing Mandurah and taking a scenic coastal ride through Rockingham and Fremantle returning back to Perth City. Riders are welcomed back by a great crowd.

Ms Fowler explained that to participate in the ride each rider is required to raise a minimum of $2,500 therefore collectively the team needs to raise $32,500.
"It's going to take a lot bake sales, many many Freddo Frogs, sausage sizzles, high teas and movie nights to reach our target," she said. "If you think you could spare some change for an online donation, please do not hesitate to do so. You might just be saving your own or your loved one's life in the future. Our message for this year's ride is; A new year, a new ride, a new cure.... Please help us achieve this amazing goal," Ms Fowler asked.
