Year 12 Ball
The Year 12 Ball held at the Parmelia Hilton on Friday 24 February truly was ‘A Night Under the Stars’ with all attendees beautifully presented and behaved. Congratulations to the Student Prefects for their work with Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, Nick Jones ensuring the evening went smoothly. After being presented to the Principal, students and their guests were served mocktails, followed by a delicious buffet meal. The DJ then livened up proceedings with some great dance music. Belle and Beau of the Ball, Hannah Watts and Ronan Marc-Cowley were presented with their sashes and took a turn around the dance floor, to great applause from their peers. All students should now have the login details to access photos of this memorable event; these can be obtained from Mr Jones if anyone has missed out.

Secondary Inter-House Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to everyone who participated in or assisted with the Secondary Inter-House Swimming Carnival on Thursday 2 March. Although it was very humid with grey skies overhead, the storms stayed away and everyone had an enjoyable and successful day. Thank you to Head of Health and Physical Education, Lonneke Holleman and the HPE Department staff for all their work leading up to and on, the big day. A huge thanks also, to all parent volunteers and helpers who help make these important school events the success they are. The ACC Inter-School Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 14 March at HBF Stadium. Successful student participants will have received more information about this event from Miss Dunn.

SEQTA Primary Welcome and Secondary Update
It was my very great pleasure to speak to a number of primary parents this week, giving them an overview of our Community Portal, SEQTA Engage. The School is expanding the use of the excellent SEQTA digital platform throughout the Primary School. Parents of Primary School students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 will shortly receive welcome provisioning emails to join SEQTA Engage. If you receive a provisioning email please activate the link within one week.

Parents of secondary students are reminded that you will require access to SEQTA Engage to receive information about the upcoming Parent/Teacher Interview Evenings and to view Interim Reports for Year 7 to Year 12 students. Parent/Teacher Interview Evening information including the appointment card will be available on SEQTA Engage from Monday 13 March. Interim Reports for Year 10, 11 and 12 students will be available for viewing by Friday 24 March and for Year 7, 8 and 9 students by Friday 31 March.

If you have recently changed your email address or experience any difficulties with SEQTA Engage please contact Karen Ayres at the School on 9495 8121.

Invitation to School Events
Parents are invited to attend a number of Secondary School events to be held in the lead up to the end of term. The Parent/Teacher Interview Evenings are a terrific chance to touch base with your child's subject/course teachers. Students are expected to attend the interviews in full Summer Uniform, to be held on:

  • Thursday 30 March - Year 10, 11 and 12 Parent Teacher Interview Evening, 5:00pm – 7:00pm in The Commons
  • Monday 3 April – Year 7, 8 and 9 Parent Teacher Interview Evening, 5:00pm – 7:00pm in the Year 7 Centre and The Commons

Also in the last week of the Term 1 there will be two important events. The Secondary Colours Assembly will be held on Wednesday 5 April at 8.45am in the BDISC. At this assembly we will acknowledge student successes and representation at the Inter-House and Inter-School Swimming Carnivals, as well as announce the Year 7 House Councillors.

On Friday 7 April at 9:00am in the BDISC, the Whole School Easter Worship Service will take place. This is traditionally a very special John Wollaston occasion. We look forward to welcoming you to the School at these important events.

Mindfulness at JWACS
There have recently been a number of media spotlights on high profile sporting identities, expressing the positive changes they have experienced in their busy and stressful lives, largely due to practicing mindfulness on a daily basis. In the 2017 Student Homework Diary there is a new mindfulness activity for students to practice every week. Here are a few ideas from the diary that you might like to practice at home!

Life’s Backpack – think of all the people, places, pets and things that are important to you and why. Then pack your imaginary life backpack and carry it around with you everywhere you go. (2017, p. 26)

Favourite Song – in your mind mentally sing your favourite song while at the same time writing out all of the words and describe what they mean to you and how they make you feel. (2017, p. 30)

Sounds – go outside, close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you for one minute. Then write down all of the sounds you heard and what made them. (2017, p. 32)

Best wishes
Karen Ayres
