Dinosaurs alive during National Parks Week celebrations

It’s National Parks Week from 4 to 12 March and the City of Armadale is celebrating by enlisting the help of a host of mythical and prehistoric creatures to entice digital natives into the great outdoors.

Download the app Magical Park for your Android or Apple devices and when you visit the Armadale City Centre during the week, drop into Memorial Park to collect dinosaur eggs and run from dinosaurs or walk through a fantasy land of fairies and unicorns to locate lost kittens.

Available until 20 March, Magical Park will transform selected City parks into a digital fantasy land, creating a virtual world seen through the app once you enter the boundaries of the park.

The Magical Park app will also be available at Rushton Park in Kelmscott and the Harrisdale Playing Fields, allowing kids to run free and delve into a little augmented reality.

While still a digital app, it is a fantastic opportunity to get the kids motivated and off the couch and moving outdoors to burn up some energy and enjoy a few of the City’s 795 reserves and 74 playgrounds.

Family favourites at Movies in the Park

Enjoy a relaxing outdoor cinema experience with friends and family at Movies in the Park, proudly presented by the City of Armadale.

Bring a picnic rug and hamper to start these perfect autumn evenings outdoors in the fresh air and natural beauty of some of the City’s most picturesque parks.

Friday 10 March – Rushton Park: Jungle Book
Friday 24 March – Reg Williams Reserve: Finding Dory
Friday 7 April – William Skeet Oval: Kung Fu Panda

Check the City’s website for all session times and details.

Last swim before upgrade

On the eve of the much-awaited $26 million upgrade of the Armadale Aquatic Centre, a final swim will be held on Saturday, April 8 before the centre closes its doors.

All past and current users of the centre are invited to attend the closing celebrations from 11am to 2.30pm.

Refreshments and entertainment will be available, before the Mayor officially closes the Centre, signalling a new era for the important community facility.

The Great Cocky Count

Registrations for the 2017 Great Cocky Count on Sunday 9 April, are now open.

The City is encouraging residents to join in the biggest annual survey and monitor a site to assist with the annual count.

Volunteers monitor known roost sites to count the cockatoos as they come into their evening roosts
on a single night.

In Perth, the count takes place every April at sunset, usually between 5.30 and 6.30pm, to record sightings of white-tailed and red-tailed black cockatoos.

For more information or to find out about a roost site, contact 9387 2251 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Registrations close by Sunday 19 March.

Focus on the corner store

Traditional, stand-alone shops were once the cornerstone of the community in the days before major malls and shopping centres.

There was always a friendly local deli nearby. Some still exist.

Grab your camera and snap some pics of your local shop or favourite family-run store and enter the 2017 Focus Photography Competition for a chance to win $500.

The competition closes 31 March. Visit the library website here for full details and terms and conditions.
