Arts Week 2017
Last week was Arts Week at John Wollaston and there was an amazingly diverse range of student talent and skill on show. I was particularly impressed by the drawings of our Year 9 Art students in the style of Perth street artist Stormie Mills. We also had some innovative string art designs beautifying the fencing around the Upper Primary Build and the area around the Art Studios. Thank you to all contributing visual artists!

The annual Mr Squiggle competition certainly brought out the ‘right brained’ creativity in our students. Congratulations to Karrina Cain and Carmina Farano for their amazing squiggle entries! The winning art and some highly commended runners up are currently on display in the LRC windows. Click to see some entries at Community Relations

The week was rounded off with the Secondary Talent Show on Friday 17 March. This is always an exciting and well-supported event and I personally loved watching all the wonderful performances from comedy to solo and group instrumentalists. Congratulations to all performers, with special congratulations to Tiana Pearce (1st), Madeleine Cant and Melissa White (2nd) and Martha Dodge (3rd).

A huge thank you goes to Head of the Arts, Peta Ranieri and all our wonderful Arts Department staff for their work across the School.

Invitation to School Events
Parents are invited to attend a number of Secondary School events to be held in the lead up to the end of term. The Parent/Teacher Interview Evenings are a terrific chance to touch base with your child's subject/course teachers. Students are expected to attend the interviews in full Summer Uniform, to be held on:

  • Thursday 30 March - Year 10, 11 and 12 Parent Teacher Interview Evening, 5:00pm – 7:00pm in The Commons
  • Monday 3 April – Year 7, 8 and 9 Parent Teacher Interview Evening, 5:00pm – 7:00pm in the Year 7 Centre and The Commons

Also in the last week of the Term 1 there will be two important events.

  • The Secondary Colours Assembly will be held on Wednesday 5 April at 8.45am in the BDISC.
At this assembly we will acknowledge student successes and representation at the Inter-House and Inter-School Swimming Carnivals, as well as announce the Year 7 House Councillors.
  • On Friday 7 April at 9:00am in the BDISC, the Whole School Easter Worship Service will take place.
This is traditionally a very special John Wollaston occasion. We look forward to welcoming you to the School at these important events.

ACC Inter-School Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to all participants in the ACC Inter-School Swimming Carnival that was held on Tuesday 14 March at HBF Stadium. Our John Wollaston team earned a well-deserved second place, with some notable individual and relay team performances. Congratulations and thanks also go to Miss Dunn for her wonderful oversight of this event.

Year 7 and 8 Encounters
A very successful Year 7 Encounter camp came to an end yesterday, with exhausted but happy adventurers returning safely to school. Year 7 students had a great time participating in a range of activities that challenged and entertained in a safe and supportive environment. Thank you to Co-Curricular Coordinator, David Crawford, Year 7 teaching and support staff, and our enthusiastic parent volunteers for all your hard work and assistance with this event.

For more pictures form the Year 7 Camp see Community Relations.

Our Year 8s are looking forward to their Encounter experience, commencing next week from Monday 27 to Wednesday 29 March at the Swan Valley Adventure Centre. They are sure to have a fantastic time with all the activities Mr Jones has planned for this new addition to our school’s unique Encounter programme.

NAPLAN 2017 Update
NAPLAN assessments for Year 3,5, 7 and 9 students will take place on the following dates this year:

Tuesday 9 May – Language Conventions; Writing
Wednesday 10 May – Reading
Thursday 11 May – Numeracy

More information about these assessments can be found in the link below.

Well-being – Square Breathing
Part of well-being is having a healthy body and a healthy mind. Regularly practicing self-calming deep breathing can develop a healthy body and mind by reducing anxiety and tension. Square Breathing is an effective deep breathing relaxation strategy. Sitting with your hands on your lap, feet on the floor and on a slow count of five;

  1. Inhale and exhale through your nose only
  2. Purse your lips as if to whistle, inhale through your mouth and exhale with lips relaxed, through your mouth
  3. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth
  4. Purse your lips as if to whistle, inhale through your mouth and exhale through your nose

Best wishes
