Wet weather uniform for Kindergarten to Year 1 students. We request that all ELC children purchase a navy rain jacket, waterproof pants and gum boots as part of the winter uniform. The aim is for our children to be outdoors engaging with the natural environment come rain or shine!

Money raised from this event will continue to fund Anglicare WA's vital programs and services, supporting more than 33,000 Western Australian's each year. Some of our programs receive no government funding and depend entirely on philanthropic support.

Head to the HBF Run for a Reason website to sign up for your preferred distance: 4km, 12km or the half marathon. 

When you register on the HBF Run website, you register as a ‘participant’ and when asked if you are part of a team click ‘no’ – you don’t register for a team in that part of the registration process.

Nightfields coming to Armadale

Nightfields will be coming to Armadale this May and delivering four free Football and Netball clinics from Gwynne Park oval after school on a Wednesday, supported by Telstra, the City of Armadale, WAFC and Netball WA.

There will be AFL players and Netball stars attending the sessions as role models and a chance for meet and greet. The young people can turn up and register on the day. Headspace and YMCA youth workers will be present at the clinics.This is a great initiative to engage with young people in the Autumn evenings and get them actively engaging in sport and with mentors.

RSCPA’s Million Paws Walk Sunday 21 May

RSCPA’s Million Paws Walk is taking place on Sunday 21 May in South Perth. With distances of 1km, 2.5km and 5km, this family friendly event is suitable for people of all ages, and dogs of all sizes!

On the day, you and your four-legged friend will be treated to entertainment, displays, stalls, giveaways and a host of other fun activities, you could even meet an RSPCA Inspector and some dogs that are currently looking for their forever home.

UMAT 2017 preparation

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT) for Year 12 students wanting to study Medicine or Dentistry will be held on the 26 July 2017. Registration for this test is via the ACER website.

  

Simulated UMAT Day 2017 - Intensive Preparation Workshop

While the Simulated UMAT Day is extremely beneficial for Year 12 students, who will be attempting the real UMAT on the 26th of July 2017, this workshop is also highly recommended to anyone in Years 10 - 11 and aiming for a head start in UMAT preparation. Every year, students from Years 10, 11 and 12 mention to us that they wished, they had known about the UMAT NIE workshop before attempting the real UMAT, and also before Year 12 commenced. 


Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 interested in Medicine or Dentistry will need to sit the compulsory UMAT (examination) when applying for one of the above career choices. During a school holiday period, on the 4 July 2017, The National Institute of Education (NIE) will be conducting a full day UMAT preparation workshop. The workshop includes an overview of the entire UMAT process - exam, scores, standardising, applications, university requirements, interviews, past experiences, professional advice, performance expectations, and more. Each student is individually assessed and fine-tuned for peak performance. Strategic problem solving and tuition in each UMAT construct, and of course medical interviews (MMI and structured panel). The workshop will be conducted by highly experienced and expert lecturer who will define and explain each UMAT construct. A full practice test conducted under exam conditions, followed by marking and feedback session. This intense full day preparation workshop allows students to identify and explore their true strengths and weaknesses in relation to UMAT-readiness.

Year 8 Guest Speaker – Mr Graham Hyman
On Friday 12 May our Year 8 students enjoyed an entertaining presentation from Mr Graham Hyman from Youth Specialties Australia. Mr Hyman’s address was centred on the importance of positive relationships. Mr Hyman explained to the students that the most important relationship they will experience as adolescents is their relationship with their parents. The term parent was expanded to include significant adults who are responsible for the student’s upbringing. Mr Hyman encouraged our Year 8 students to maintain an open and honest relationship with their parents and reminded them that parents are the people who will love and support them the most throughout their teenage years.

Adolescence is a time which is characterised by rapid physical, emotional, cognitive and social development. It is a time when teenagers are discovering their own independence and begin to form their own views and opinions about the world around them. Kids Helpline provide some excellent advice for parents who are looking for strategies to develop more positive relationships with their teenagers. Kids Helpline acknowledges that adolescence is a difficult time for both parents and teenagers.

“Adolescence is a crucial period for young people to learn how to develop and maintain respectful relationships with others. Building such relationships requires a range of capacities and skills. If adults develop these capacities within themselves and use them in their relationships they can become positive role models for children and young people and teach them about healthy relationships.” Kids Helpline (2016)

An Amazing Two-Letter English Word
The following is an abridged version of a presentation I delivered to the Secondary School earlier this term taht I want to share with you all.

What is one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition? 

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is 'UP'. It is listed in the dictionary as an adverb, preposition, adjective, noun or verb.

It is easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP an old car.

At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP, is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is blocked UP.
We open UP a shop in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!
When it threatens to rain; it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out; it is clearing UP. When it rains, the earth soaks it UP. When it does not rain for a while; things dry UP.

People can give UP on their dreams.

UP
is indeed a confusing word, but it is also a powerful word. Especially when combined with nine other two letter words.

If it is to be, it is UP to me.

Now expand on that sentence. If it is to be a tidier school, it is up to me to put my rubbish in the bin or pick it up. If it is to be that I get better academic results, it is up to me to make that happen. If it is to be that the school is a kinder place, it is up to me to be kind to others.

Rather than feel powerless to make a difference, students should take responsibility for some of the aspects of their own lives, such as academic results, but students should also know that they can contribute to make changes in the local and global community.

I have been very privileged to spend Term 1 of 2017 volunteering and travelling in South America and Antarctica. One of the highlights of my trip was volunteering at an animal sanctuary in the Amazon for native wildlife rescued from the black market. The lady who ran the centre embodied the phrase, if it is to be it is up to me. At one of our upcoming Secondary Assemblies I will be expanding on this further.

Year 10 Portal Page
A new SEQTA portal page has been opened on Learn and Engage to current Year 10 students called ‘Course Selection 2018’. This page has a copy of the Year 11 course prerequisites required for the 2018 Year 11 courses. The page will also feature information about course selections and VET applications as we commence the process in Term 3.

ESTs for Year 12 General and Foundation courses – Monday 22 May – Wednesday 24 May
Students enrolled in Year 12 General and Foundation courses will be sitting Externally Set Tasks (ESTs), commencing Monday 21 May. These are compulsory 50 minute assessments that all Year 12s enrolled in these courses in WA, are required to sit and constitute 15% of the course assessment. The tasks are set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). However, teachers at the School will mark the assessments using a marking key provided by SCSA and sample scripts will be forwarded to them for moderation purposes. Examination conditions apply for students sitting ESTs. ESTs are sat before the examination period commences in order to meet SCSA requirements and deadlines. The regular timetable continues to apply except for when a scheduled EST is to be sat.

Year 11 and 12 Examinations  Friday 26 May – Friday 2 June
Year 11 and 12 Examinations commence Friday 26 May and conclude Friday 2 June. Students have received their examination timetable and a copy of the conditions (rules) that must be observed for examinations. Year 11 and 12 students only attend school on the days that they are to sit a scheduled examination. Most examinations are scheduled for the morning, commencing at 8:40 am. After sitting their examination (students must stay for the full duration of the examination), students should return home. Should a student wish to attend school at times when they do not have a scheduled examination, they must sign in at Student Services Reception on arrival (or after their examination if they intend remaining at school) and sign out when they depart the School. Provision will be made for students to study/work in the Library Resource Centre.

Classes for Year 11 and 12 ATAR, General, Foundation, Preliminary and Certificate courses are generally suspended for the examination period. However, please note that teachers of these courses may require their students to attend some lessons. If this applies to your son/daughter (you will receive notification from the teacher), the expectation is for him/her to attend these lessons. VET students continue with their regular programme on Thursday and Friday but do not attend school Monday to Wednesday, unless their teachers require them to do so.

When not attending school for a scheduled examination, the expectation for all students is to be studying at home, completing course tasks, attending work placements or attending TAFE (VET students). The time should not be viewed as additional free/holiday time. All classes recommence on Tuesday 6 June. Monday 5 June is a public holiday.

School Fair - a great success
Our School Fair, held in the grounds on Saturday 6 May, was a great success. In beautiful sunshine, the large crowd enjoyed the entertainment, Pet Show, pony rides, silent auction, food and entertainment stalls throughout the day. There is something special about an old style fair, with its relaxed and happy atmosphere. Thank you for your support of this important event for the School. Our focus was more on "friend raising" than "fund raising" so it was gratifying to raise approximately $3,000 which will be directed to resources for the students.

The stall holders also enjoyed the Fair with the following email received by the Business Manager Gailene Shore:

Year 6 Encounter in Canberra 
This week our Year 6 students have spent an action packed four days in our nation's capital. Their itinerary included the major tourist attractions of Canberra plus enjoying a special residential experience at the Australian Institute of Sport. The trip is wonderful learning experience for our students, many of whom have not flown before or been away from family for such an extended period. I look forward in the coming days to hearing stories of the Canberra Encounter.

Netflix Series - 13 Reasons Why
You may have heard through the media about a Netflix series called 13 Reasons Why. This has become popular with adolescents and generated a significant amount of attention. Whilst not all children have access to Netflix, it may have been discussed with peers or scenes viewed via YouTube.

The series involves the suicide of a teenage girl. It also includes scenes of physical and sexual assault. It is possible your child may have been affected by this series, mainly due to the impact of suicidal imagery and what is called suicidal contagion; an increased risk of suicide. As parents, there are measures you can take to reduce the risk of harm. The first step is to discuss this series with your child and then seek help if required.

Two organisations have provided important information and talking points about 13 Reasons Why. Mental Health First Aid Australia has important information specifically about the series and contact details for further help. See the attached link:

I raise this issue to support you, as parents, in the best interests of the welfare of our students. Our pastoral staff are always available to meet with students and parents to discuss issues of concern. Indeed for many families, the House Teacher or Head of House is the first port of call.
